Star of the Week

Charlie was the "Star of the Week" at school this week. He told me that this meant he was able to do whatever he wanted this week at school. I don't know how true this was, but he did get to make a poster expressing his love of nature documentaries and displaying some family photographs. He also got to take his alligator skull and pet turtle, Tuck, to class. Charlie has told me these items were very popular among his peers. I suspect they gave him a certain amount of street cred on the playground -- which was the ultimate goal being that he has recently started at a new school. Kaity also got to eat lunch with him on Friday.

So, the first year of our little Monkey's life has flown by. I cannot believe she is already one! Sophie is a sweet little girl and the light of our household. Her silly antics and funny expressions always make us laugh. Sophie is quite the mischief maker as well. She is often caught red-handed so to speak. Her tiny chubby fingers pawing in cupboards and drawers. I'm afraid she follows in her older sister's footsteps a little too much. She is often found in or around mommy's makeup, brushing her hair, or basically doing anything girlie that she sees her older sister doing. There have been many tea parties and many hours of dress-up logged to date.

Her favorite (and might I add only) word is "Hi!" And that about sums her up. She's full of energy and life and when she's not teething (which seems to be more often than not these days. She's the only child I have had that teeths for weeks and then only gets one tooth at a time) she's full of smiles, giggles, and silliness. We love our Sophie-Monkey. Happy Birthday baby girl!

Grandma came to visit early in December and we had a Christmas fiesta. The kids loved having Grandma around and missed Bompa, who was left at home to water the plants.

Sophie's favorite part of the celebration was when she was finally unwrapped.

Grandma gave the kids awesome journals with their faces on them so they would not confuse them for others. We all got photo mugs too. Grandma's creative alliteration proved to be quite a hit for Champion Charlie, Great Gracie, and Supreme Sophie.

Charlie's school does a fundraiser just before Thanksgiving where they run for food. The kid ran hard. I told him he had to in order to stay warm since he was the ONLY kindergartner wearing shorts that day. Charlie is funny. Halloween Party + Poor Weather = A muddy crowded house and lots of Halloween fun

We had our annual Halloween party the weekend before Halloween. It was a bit crazy but loads of fun. Unfortunately for us and our guests we had a lot of the festivities planned for the backyard, but the entire morning and afternoon of the party, it rained and HARD.

My problem though (as Andy will attest to) is that when I go to the trouble of planning something (ie: apple bobbing, Dora pinatas, pumpkin carving, and donut contests) it has to happen. Let's just say we are hardcore and no amount of rain and mud could stop us from "enjoying" the planned festivities.

Here are just a few highlights from the evenings events:

State Fair of Texas = Fun for All

Every year we look forward to the Texas State Fair (in September). Really, between the fried everything and the fun-for-all-ages attractions, why wouldn't you go? They have 1200 pound pigs and petting zoos with hand sanitizer and rabbit shows with bunnies as big as dogs. I am not sure what your idea of an awesome state fair experience entails, but this one is hard to beat. A few years ago we even saw Boyz II Men. It was a life-long dream fulfilled for Andy, and YES, they're still touring, the state fair circuit.

Charlie and Gracie participated in the backyard circus. Charlie was an amazing human cannonball! Andy was also very skilled at holding Charlie in the air and walking him onto the stage.

With Charlie in kindergarten during the day, Gracie has decided to try her best to pal around with Sophie. While Sophie may not be quite as active and creative at play as Charlie, she adds a whole new dimension to Gracie's play. She will not argue with Gracie about the games they play and she is always a willing participant.

I came into Sophie's room the other day where I had left her for a minute and found her dressed in this tutu. She and Gracie were having a party.

Gracie was apparently wearing the tutu herself before she decided to share it with her sister.

If you have met Gracie before

You know that she loves to sing and dance. She also loves the holidays. Even before she was two I remember waking up in the morning to her silly singing in her crib (not all of which was comprehensible beyond her own little ears).

She is very good at remembering songs she has learned, as well as creating her own renditions of songs. The other key component to the story is, if you know Gracie you also know she has absolutely no volume control. She understands what it means to whisper and talk softly, but she believes in being heard, and therefore, LOUD.

Today in Sacrament meeting Andy was sitting at the Sacrament table and I was left with all three kiddos by myself. Well, as a mother I have become very good at tuning out loud and unnecessary voices in order to listen to other things or people. Gracie had decided out of the blue to began singing Jingle Bells. I didn't even realize it was happening until I looked over at Andy, who of course is making a "Please control her!" face.

So I said: "Gracie, we need to talk softly and use a whispering voice in church."

To which Gracie matter-of-factly replied: "But then no one can hear me."

Uh, good point. Or maybe exactly my point.

where she wanted to go for her birthday lunch and she naturally responded with "McDonald's." After some convincing I had her agree to go to the American Girl Bistro for some milkshakes following lunch. She insisted on wearing this crown and her princess shoes the entire day, which was both adorable and annoying. We had to plan twice as long to walk anywhere because her princess shoes are at least two times slower than her practical shoes.

At the American girl Bistro they gave her a little sticker to wear around the store that said, "It's my birthday!." They also gave her a candle in her shake and sang to her. Super Cute.

I do not know where this girl comes from. She is such a girly girl. She loves all things beautiful, frilly, and pink. She is a singer like you wouldnt believe. she loves to make up little ditties and rhymes about everything. She loves dancing and being independent. She is too smart for her own good. We love her tremendously and we are so glad she is a part of our family. Gracie girl, we love you!

Of course she had a princess party.

And a well-decorated princess cake, or maybe just a pink cake with princess figurines stuck on top.

Well, The First Day of Kindergarten Came

While visiting grandma and bompa we went to a museum that had a noah's ark exhibit for kids. it was a big hit and charlie and gracie had fun exploring all the different activities. i'm certain they have a very clear understanding now what ark life was actually like. one of the highlights which wasnt photographically documented: shoveling fake pooh! whoever the mastermind was behind that activity deserves recognition.

im not sure what gracie is doing in this photo but it must have been something noah and his family did.

She can sit unassisted for periods of 5 seconds or more before tumbling over... (The time constraints make taking a photo a rather exhausting and somewhat risky task.)

She can play for periods of 5 minutes or more all by herself...

She can feed herself...

She can sit up like a big girl and take a bath.

I cannot believe our little monkey is six months old! She brings so much laughter and joy into our home. Sophia is always smiling and discovering new things, like her feet. She uses her feet nearly as much as her hands for grabbing things. It's hilarious to see her and her feet at work. That's in part, where her nickname (little monkey) comes from. She loves to be snuggled and squeezed by her older brother and sister and she sure endures well all the torturous misdeeds they force upon her. Her sweet smile and squeal when I first get her out of bed in the morning is something I look forward to daily. We love this little girl tons.

Gracie used to give herself a haircut were in my makeup drawer in the bathroom. The damage has not been fully assessed as of yet. After her severe rebuking she banned herself to her room as punishment to me. And then, like any pre-teen two year-old would say as she slammed the door, "I'm never coming out!" What!? Umm...huh.

At this point I could no longer keep a straight face and I had to excuse myself. I can't be too upset though because I never actually told her not to cut her hair. She wasn't directly disobeying me. So I guess it really is my fault after all.

Hello. I am The Son-in-Law--the inventor of said blog. I hardly ever post on here anymore for two reasons: (i) Kaity's friends stop reading this when I do; and (ii) I have a job. It has taken some significant circumstances to bring me back to blogging. Those circumstances include a stirring within me to pay homage to the hottest mom in the world. I was looking at some pictures of my growing forehead, and reminiscing of my younger-years when that forehead had more foliage. But I was not handsome then either, but about 5 years ago a very lovely lady began appearing in pictures with that shabby young fellow. For some reason she is still appearing in pictures with the slightly heavier, slightly balder, and significantly grumpier version of that bright-eyed boy of five years ago. I really don't know why--as her beauty, grace, charm, and--obviously--patience have grown exponentially. I live in a state of continual amazement at her ability to love me, despite me. I love her more today than I ever have, but for some reason, the growing complexity of life makes it difficult at times to show it. So, before the seven readers of this blog, I shout it from the electronic equivalent of a rooftop--in a sparsely populated neighborhood. Kaity, you are lovely. I love you, and thanks for loving me.

I like a little spontaneity in my life and when Andy had an opportunity to go to ny for work, we decided it might be fun if we (the kids and I) joined him for the long weekend. I flew out with the kids on Thursday morning and then returned Tuesday morning. It was a bit of work but I would do it again. Andy was able to shorten his work days on Saturday, Sunday, and Monday so we could all hang out. personally, I love the public transit systems in ny and i think it's fun to navigate through the city via subway and bus, however, andy proved to be more of a taxi man himself. the kids and i took the subway and bus. the kids and andy and i took taxis. hmmm....

Our first hotel stay with a family of five. super fun.

It's official. Charlie will be entering kindergarten in the fall. I am 30 and I have a kindergartner. I cannot believe how time flies and our lives change so quickly. Just five short years ago I was eight months pregnant and driving out to Texas in a moving truck, anticipating and imagining what our future would hold for us.

Charlie is an incredible kid. He's smart and thoughtful and clever and funny. He is a good helper and a good boy. I am so proud of him for the good choices he makes and for the way he loves and cares for his little sisters. He is an expert at entertaining the girls and he is the only one who can make so laugh so hysterically. His funny dance moves and silly songs can really get her going.

He reads and swims and laughs and plays hard all day long. He even makes his own pb &j's for dinner. He loves bugs and animals of all kinds and the kid has a fantastic imagination.

I am very blessed. Charlie-bug, I love you.

Sea World 2010

Since we heard we had family moving to San Antonio we have been planning this trip to Sea World (well over a year now). Fun was had by all. Thanks to the Buhlers for all their wonderful accommodations. I am certain we would not have enjoyed our trip nearly as much if it wasn't for their efforts. The Great American Pastime

If we have learned anything since moving to Texas it is that Texans take their children's athletics very seriously. Charlie rocked t-ball this Season. He generally played short stop and third baseman and he was very skilled at the complicated task of hitting the ball off the tee.

If you have never been to a four year-old t-ball game i highly recommend it. It is one of the most entertaining athletic events I have attended.
